it is a normal rs-232 serial interface. Just the 3 wires to connect, but some other wires have to be shorted at the PC end. Its 9600bps.
The wires to short are the handshaking ones

4,6,1 shorted together
7,8 shorted

//  Here is a 2007 version of the Curtis programmer software. If anyone has a newer version please add
//  I couldn't upload an EXE file here so changed the file extension to .rtf
//  Change it back to .EXE once downloaded

** EDIT, newer Version 4 of software nearer end of thread

The chip off M4 (which gives 15v) regulates it to a 5v supply to power the other chip which is an inverter

Sam, save the file to your computer, then right click it and type over the name, just like you would rename any file

Hi,

First of all, I want to say thank you for this.  Of the many posts out there, this one ended up being the most correct and helpful for connecting the 1314 software on my PC to my Curtis 1236 Controller.

When I first read this post, I ignored it and went with one that suggested connecting directly to the DB9 serial port in my laptop.  I did this mainly because it was a heck of a lot easier -- it didn't work though.  Lesson learned.

In the end I was successful by using an Arduino UNO R3 board as the USB-TTL converter and a 4001 IC (2 XOR gates) to invert the in/outs.

If anybody's interested in the wiring details for the Arduino/4001 solution, let me know.

Dave, I would be very interested to see your solution, and the code!

Did this old version of the 1314 software allow you to achieve what you wanted? I understand it is quite out of date?

Thanks for the link.
I would be interested to know how people are getting on using these cables and the older software? I think the latest version of the software has a "protection dongle" so you cannot copy it.
I moved away from Curtis controllers ,yself, I much prefer open source products, but I see some people buy these cables so wondering what model of controller and projects they are using them for?

Hi I'm new in this forum. I've just purchased an old curtis 1238 . This old software works with it?
How could I run with a Mac?
For a future conversion what are the open source controllers option to Curtis? Thanks !

They maybe good at making controllers, but their IT team sucks.

Hello all
Thank you all for a great work with working out an Interface and for supplying links to the software.
How ever I can't get the new v4 software to work with my Interface. It is not the FTDI USB interface there has been refered to, but my interface works with the older v3 software.
Anybody have an idea what can be the problem?
I have made the shortings on the RS232 connector (7-8 and 1-4-6)
The Curtis kontroller is a 1243-4301 sepex with an elderly firmware.
Cheers Mogens

Sorry Morgens I don't know either, I've given up using Curtis controllers and Separately Excited (Sepex) motors too. Just out of interest what is your Sepex motor driving?
I think Sepex can be difficult to set up well, and with the extra wires to the coil there are more variables. How do you find yours?

Hello Ampman
I have build an electric ATV for keeping my driveway clean and fine, so I need a vehicle with a huge moment but no need for high speed.
I got the Curtis controller and a Advanced DC Motor DD3-4003, from a friend and it works very fine with a huge gearing, to get the moment and slow speed.
I then used the interface and software link, found in another thread, and it all worked fine. Then I saw this thread with the info about the shortings in the RS232 and furthermore the link to the newer software. But doesn't work ☺

I have a problem more and that is I can't find any specifications for the motor.

Hello Dave
I happened on this site while seaching for solutions to my project of using an ex mobility gopher drive system for an electric motor for a boat.
The drive controller is a curtis 1228
I would be most grateful for your Arduino Uno solution, the schematic and program
Thanking you
