I've ordered a 550amp max, Kelly DC motor controller. They were helpful by email.

They said that this would be suitable for a 4kw motor that draws up to 150amps continuous.

The software is free and they've thrown in the rs232 too!

Anyone had any experience using the software to configure?

Yes you need to supply the controller some power then connect it with the USB and run the software which is here

Just to add that a small 12v battery will be enough to power the controller to configure it, although the low voltage red led will flash it will still change settings.

I've found the Kelly set up straightforward. Its only the field map settings (for a SEPEX) which I wasn't sure about, but set field min to 15-20% and field max in the 60-70% range and that should be ok, one of those things that you can experiment with!
