When I was selecting a motor, I hadn't fully realised the many disadvantages of Separately Excited DC motors. To help warn others I will list a few of them ...

1) Still use Brushes
2) Less efficient than permanent magnet motors as the field requires amps
3) More heat
4) More wiring
5) The controllers are complex and expensive
6) There aren't so many controller manufacturers
7) The controllers require configuration software - more expense.

In a nutshell I would chose a standard brushed DC motor, or a Brushless DC motor over a Sepex.
Fortunately not so many people are using them these days.
